Kathy: You'll get fewer, if any pop-ups, but you have have to be sure to run Adaware as part of your routine maintenence jobs to keep these things at bay. Adaware is not a pop up stopper, it's a spyware remover. If your on the internet, spyware is pretty much a given.....you just have to keep getting rid of it. Spam is another animal altogether. You get that for several reasons....it could be the spyware but it is the e-mail address that you use to sign up for, for different things on the internet as well as posting boards where you leave your e-mail address for others to contact you. I've suggested before using one of the free e-mail accounts that one can obtain from Y A H O O when signing up for things on the internet. Many of the sites sell their valid e-mail lists, obtained when people sign up at their site, to spam marketers, henceforth spam in your e-mail box. Spam marketers also use programs that harvest posted e-mails on the internet for the purpose of obtaining valid e-mail addresses and then spamming you. Using another e-mail account, other than the one you use for your personal use, will usually divert most of the spam mail you are now getting to the free e-mail account. Y A H O O requires only that you access your account once every 30 days to keep the account active....so just go in and empty the spam once a month. When I signed up for GC I used one of the free accounts to set up the initial account and then once a member, changed my personal settings to send contact mail to the e-mail account I use. (I'm not suggesting that GC is one that sells our e-mail accounts....I just cover my butt and sign up for all things on the internet this way.) I get far less spam in my personal e-mail account. Angela: You can delete all that Adaware found and quarantined....it only picks up spyware and adware.....nothing you need. Data miner is not a virus....it's a piece of spyware, placed on your computer, without your knowledge, by internet sites that you visit. GC places one on your computer everytiime you visit called REDSTAR. Just keep up with running Adaware to remove. Judy

A huge thank you, Judy and to all you computer afficianados. I've successfully run Adaware and discovered all sorts of nasties which I've quarantined. Is it possible to work out which categories I can destroy straightaway? I also have some called "data miner" I've got my fingers crossed that this isn't a virus because I'm usually pretty careful about what I open.

I'm not sure what you mean. Did you received an e-mail from a Peter Savage and when you clicked it open a bug appeared and when you click on the bug, it won't go away? If it was mail you opened from an unknown sender, the possibilty that you've unleashed a virus is there. The bug you mention may also be your anti-virus picking up the fact that it has detected a virus. At any rate, make sure you update you anti virus definitions and do a full system scan of your computer. If you don't already have a program like Ada-ware, directions are below to download, install and run it. Run both, anti-virus and Adaware program and see if that doesn't get rid of the problem and advise accordingly....Judy :) ADAWARE Spy-ware Removal 1. Go to http(:)//www(.)majorgeeks(.)com/download(.)php?det=506 (Remove the brackets from the address.) 2. Download the free version of Adware….scroll to bottom of page to DOWNLOAD HERE and choose PLANET MIRROR. 3. Install onto your computer. 4. After installation, an icon will appear on your desktop. Click it to open. 5. Click on CHECK FOR UPDATES NOW. Follow the NEXT prompts. (This updates any definitions to the program since the download was posted on the internet. Do this right before scanning your computer each time you use it to be sure the software is always up to date.) 6. After definitions are updated click on SCAN NOW. 7. Click NOW to start the scan. 8. When the computer is done scanning it will display all the spyware it’s found. Click on NEXT (or if you want to view what it found you can click on SHOW LOGFILE first. After viewing logfile click on close and it will return you to where you can click on NEXT.) 9. You’ll now be looking at SCANNING RESULTS and here, too, you will see what spyware has been found. Using your mouse, click the small empty box, in the first column, in front of each item found, so that a check mark appears in front of it. (For some reason sometimes the check marks are there automatically, sometimes you have to put them there manually.) 10. After everything is checked off click on QUARANTINE. 11. A small box appears and asks you to name the file….I use the day’s date. Then hit OK (or whatever the prompt is.) 12. Click on REMOVE and you’ll be advised or asked if it’s OK to remove….click OK and the spyware found is “quarantined.” The reason for quarantining over deleting is because if by some freak of nature, something on your computer needs is removed by accident by the program, you can go back and “restore” what was removed. In a day or two, you can open the adaware program if you want and completely delete the quarantined items if all is well….and it should be. This is just a safe guard for you…..In all the computers I’ve worked on I’ve never had a problem with this program. I also use it on all 5 of my own computers. To delete quarantined items: 1. Click open the Adaware icon on your desktop. 2. Click on OPEN QUARANTINE LIST 3. All quarantined items will show. Simply right click on it and choose the option DELETE ARCHIVE. You will note here, this is where you would also choose RESTORE if you needed to.
