Thank you Emma Yes found this one, John & Richard had married by then - found them too. This does confirm that maybe the 1881 was right - that Maria was Georgiana's mother not in Law, but I will keep an open mind. Thanks for your time - greatly appreciated Linda

I had that feeling all along with regards to the military bit that is. I would never have thought of the fact with regards to Maria being the in Law, but it would make sense. So if my calculations are correct Richards father Peter McGregor Chantler is the son of Maria's Second husband George Chantler - so do you suggest I go straight for George hoping Peter will pop up? I would like to thank you Judy, you have thrown a new light on my desperate situation. Take care Judy Linda ps do all the buttinsking you want.

Judy Report 3 Feb 2004 06:30

Not to be a buttinski, but Maria Chantler would not be Georgiana's mother, but her mother in-law from her marriage to the Chantler children's father. Census takers were not always accurate and may have jotted relationship down incorrectly. Other avenue, at least to this family listed above, would be Georgiana had two children out of wedlock before marrying and having daughter. That would then make relationship between Maria and Georgiana that of mother and daughter. Either way, there is no husband listed in the household.....a possible seperation of the marriage or husband in military? Judy :)

Hello Julie In the 1881 it states: Georgiana Hill Head married John Chantler aged 23 Son Richard Chantler aged 19 Son Rosa Hill Dau aged 10 Maria Chantler aged 64 mother widowed Maria is the mother of Georgiana. Maria married first of all a Mr Hall? then she married second a George Chantler, who this Chantler is I have no idea - in died in 1879. I Think Georgiana's married twice, second to a John Hill away at the time of the census as I found them in the 1901 in Battersea running a music school. Did Georgiana have a son out of wedlock - was Peter John's brother. Are you really confussed now Julie Linda

Julie,

Are you sure the census was stating John as the brother of Richard? Perhaps he was the brother of Peter or his wife, so Richard's uncle. How old is he said to be? He could have been a nephew - I'm sure they put things down wrongly occasionally. Were there other siblings with the right parentage? Leave this line for a bit, explore others and he may crop up with the right parents.

I have been trying to find my GG Grandfather and GGG for the past 6 years, and now I am well and truly stuck. My GG Richard Chantler was married in 1883 St Pancras aged 21 an Emma Guy. On the marriage cert it states his father as Peter MacGregor Chantler. I have tried to find Richard on the 1881 and came up with a Richard Chanter (no L) in St Pancras aged 19 - Richard was a Pianoforte Tuner and was his father Peter and the majority of the Chantlers. It states he had a brother on the 1881 John Chantler born Gravesend, Kent not Kentish Town, and I found his birth cert which states that his father was a John Chantler not Peter and Georgiana Hall both Pianoforte Tuners. I am really confussed and don't know which way to turn - any advise or shoving me in the right direct would be appreciated. Many thanks Linda
