Hello All, I received a marriage cert (1840 Kirkby Stephen) for my ggg grandad, John Ellwood, and was surprised to see that he was a widower when he married my ggg granma, Margaret Richardson nee Parker (she was also a widow!). Any ideas as how I can find out who his first marriage was to? I've found at least three possibilities on the LDS site. As these date before 1840 I cannot check any census data! Ideas please!! Thanks, Gillian

There is a good chance that his wife died in or after 1837,as men at that time didn't often keep house for themself for long, so I would look for a death of the correct name during 1837-1840, using the LDS first names as a guide. Parish records might then confirm 'wife of John', if you are lucky.

Hi, On the 1841 census, John has remarried but the only children are from his marriage to Margaret his second wife. I will have a look at deaths though and see if there are any female Ellwoods that correspond date & locationwise. Thanks, Gillian
