Ist marriage before 1840 - help please

Hello All, I received a marriage cert (1840 Kirkby Stephen) for my ggg grandad, John Ellwood, and was surprised to see that he was a widower when he married my ggg granma, Margaret Richardson nee Parker (she was also a widow!). Any ideas as how I can find out who his first marriage was to? I've found at least three possibilities on the LDS site. As these date before 1840 I cannot check any census data! Ideas please!! There is a good chance that his wife died in or after 1837,as men at that time didn't often keep house for themself for long, so I would look for a death of the correct name during 1837-1840, using the LDS first names as a guide. Parish records might then confirm 'wife of John', if you are lucky. |

Hi, On the 1841 census, John has remarried but the only children are from his marriage to Margaret his second wife. I will have a look at deaths though and see if there are any female Ellwoods that correspond date & locationwise. Thanks, Gillian |
