IF the spelling of a surname varies from birth and marriage ceritificate. which one do you pick. KIM

I have certificates where Clark(e) is spelt with and without the e, also Ransom(e) with and without the e. If you can match up other information you just have to realise that a lot of people weren't very good at spelling in the past (or the present for that matter) and carry on researching using both spellings

The birth certificate says Gudgin and the rest says Gudgeon.
