Thank you all for your help. It looks like I'll have to invest in the wedding certificate, to see if his father fits into my tree.

The only Edwin Haberfield on VRI is Edwin Wilson Haberfield, bap 31 Mar 1833, Bristol (Glos), son of Thomas Haberfield and Mary Ann. They also had Jane Lewis Haberfield, bap 15 Apr 1832. VRI has 62 Haberfields (all Bristol) from 1729 to 1906.

David, I see, sorry I can't help with the Census then. If you don't get any help with your census request, it might be worth a shot trying a VRI search - Teresa Boyce on the Records Board is very generous with her time doing look ups for people. If his birth entry is listed, it should give his mother and fathers name. Worth a try? best of luck Teresa

I think the Edwin is the one who married Clara Headford. He's not the one you found in the 1881 Census, that one is a definite relation, great grand uncle, Edwin and Clara are transcribed as Habberford in 1881. But Habberfield in 1891 and 1901. I have just been contacted by a descendant of theirs and was hoping the earlier census's would have given a quick clue to his parents, so that I can see if he is part of my tree and therefore worth persuing. I have a long list of certificates of definite relations to buy before I buy certificates of possibles. The Habberfield's do seem to have started in North Petherton, some are still there, some in Australia, New Zealand and USA.

In the old days, part of Bristol was in Somerset and part in Glos.

David, Sorry, although I live in Bristol, my family don't come from there, so I haven't refered to the Bristol census. However, is your Edwin George Haberfield the one marrying Clara Headford on 13th April 1873? Showing in the 1881 census as being born 1853, Somerset, England? If he is, you could get his fathers name by applying for his marriage certificate. Have you not had any luck getting his birth certificate? There seem to be an awful lot of Haberfields in North Petherton! Teresa

I may be clutching at straws but if any of you kind folk has access to the 1861 or 1871 Census for Bristol, could they have a look to see if they can find Edwin George Habberfield born Bristol 1854 - I have no idea at the moment of his parents names.
