Karen, I had this problem but the other way around - I had an Edward who had been transcribed as Edmund - thought I'd check yours out but the opposite way round as even though 1881 brings up other possible spellings Edward and Edmund don't seem to appear for each other. Emma.

Diane / Crista / Sue Many thanks for your replies! Funnily enough, I have been unable to find the family on the 1881 census, which is surprising as there were 6 of them at the time! They just 'appeared' on the 1891 census, at which time they were living in Croydon, and then appear again there on the 1901, by which time there was 11 of them (poor woman!). Cobham and West End are both in Surrey, about 5.5km apart. West End and Redhill (Surrey) are 25.8km apart. Just to confuse matters, there's a Cobham and a West End in Kent!! As an aside, their son, Edward, was born in Redhill (according to the 1891 census), while the rest of their family, including his two elder sisters, were born in Croydon. I hope I've explained this okay - I've confused myself! Thanks Karen

Karen - where exactly are they living in each of the census - some folk did not know where they were born and others actually lied fearing that the information might be used to send them back to their home parish, something to do with the Poor Laws. Where is Redhill in relation to West End?. One of mine says he was born Kingston Surrey - he was actually born in Thames Ditton but his birth was registered in Kingston!! So sometimes you have to think a bit sideways. Sue

I have the same problem on one of my lines. On 1881 it says Clifton, Beds, 1891 Luton, 1901 London. I'm hoping it is Beds, but haven't found a birth yet to confirm. Maybe they had been on the whisky!!

Hi, Have found my Chapman family on the 1891 and 1901 census. My trouble is: Edmund Chapman (head of family) says he was born in Cobham, Surrey on the 1891, then in 1901 says he was born in Wickham Kent. His wife, Sarah, says she was born in West End, Surrey on the 1891, and when asked again in 1901 says she was born in Redhill! Definitely the same family, as there's 11 of them and the names/dates match. Any ideas? Have they forgotten where they were born in the space of ten years, or were they just being elusive? Many thanks, Karen
