I've just found something an Ancestry and so I'm putting on here in case anyone else didn't know it exists. Ancestry has the Death Civil Registration index online from 1982-c.2000. You can search with just a first name and a date of birth. i.e. I'm trying to trace my gran and so I put in her first name Joan, I don't know her surname because I think she remarried at some time and so I left that blank, and for keyword I put in her date of birth. It then threw up about 10 possibilites which I managed to narrow down to five (after ruling out middle names). Just in case anyone like me is trying to find out if a relative is alive or dead, then this might help! Rachel

Don't worry it took me a while to find it. Put in a search for any name, (i used malkin although the name isnt inportant) on the main page of ancestry. leave all the other boxes blank. When you go to the results page, it should show how many entries are on the Birth Marriage & detah indexes. The Civil Reg Death index should show up here. Click on that, then alter your search criteria. It only offers to search, forename, surname & keywords.

Is that on Ancestry.com or Ancestry.co.uk ? I've used one of them before for births/marriages/deaths as an alternative to free bmd but try as I might I cannot get Ancestry.co.uk. As far as my computer is concerned it doesn't exist ! Mary Brooke

http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/?rc=locale%7E&us=0 Mary you lost your coms and cos lol Try the above address minus the brackets. There is the choice for the bdm on the front page Its a great resource as its more searchable than 1837, but not sure on the completeness as I cannot find my brother in law who died in January 2002. Still everyone else is there! Barbara

For those of you having trouble accessing any site: Fixing “Website Can’t Be Found” and other Site Error Messages More than likely you have trouble with accessing quite a few sites.....particularly getting the message "website can't be found" among a few other error messages. Try the following and it should solve your problem. 1. Go to START. 2. Click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS. 4 A box appears with tabs labeled across the top. Click on ADVANCED. 5. Scroll down to the sub-heading SECURITY. 6. Make sure the following has check marks next to it: Use USE SSL 2.0, USE SSL 3.0 and USE TLS 1.0. 7. Also make sure you check off EMPTY TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE WHEN BROWSER IS CLOSED. More than likely USE TLS 1.0 is not checked of and it should be. This will give you the error messages, as well as a few others, that will prevent you from viewing web sites and the error you are getting. As an extra measure, empty cookies and temporary internet files as your computer has the site error stored in the above mentioned files for the site address you are trying to access and may continue to give you site error messages until the files are emptied. You can have free membership, but it doesn't give you access to all the features. Still worth signing on to free membership though. Margaret
