Can anyone just tell me, if it states on a solicitors letter, this person died being a spinster ( and without making a will), would this mean they have never married and are of old age?? Its just someone mentioned they are classed as a spinster if they were old and have never married.. Thanks for any clarification.

Spinster is any woman who has never married. bachelor is any man who has never married. If married and widowed male is called a widower female is called widow. These days we would just say a single woman, but there is no age limit on being a spinster you can be one at 18 or 99 .... hope this helps KIM

Tracy, "An unmarried adult female (as opposed to a widow). Commonly seen in public records to identify a single woman of age." Any unmarried woman of full age e.g. 21 or 18 depending on when it was. Emma.

Thank you both for your comments... can i just ask what if they have been divorced at some earlier period of their life.. are they just divorcee's. I take it this information is taken on trust, being if they didnt want anyone to know they had been divorced!

The above is generally true, but if marriage was annulled or declared void the the marriage was in law never assumed to have taken place and the status would revert to bachelor and spinster. even if the "marriage" produced offspring. Bob
