a-ha! i have found a marriage cert for donald to henrietta so am assuming it must be some kind of gaelic word for widower or possibly just widower without a long tail on the d! so, you were right after all Jacky :-) thanks, Kathleen

Jacky, you nearly gave me a heart attack as i was sure that was right there - however, i checked again and no letter seem to have long tails other than the last d. i think it looks almost like it says incensed (i know that's 8 letters). i'm sure of the ed at the end and a c for the third letter. thank you for trying though!

i don't think so brian....the word looks like it ends in a -ed. maybe 7 letters long? also i'm fairly sure that isabella was his first wife. i think divorce must be unlikely aswell because they are from the isle of lewis and i'm not sure that divorce would be accepted there in the early 1800's? also, i'm fairly sure it's not engaged

ok - it's a death cert and in the whether married/single etc. it says: married to isabella maciver and ____________ to henrietta mcleod. fill in the blank!!! i'm not sure if it is something to do with him remarrying? it doesn't say he was a widower
