Hi Kate, If you do go down to County Records you need to take prove of your address, ie: uni letter, Bank Statement, driving license ( think they also ask for a photo know). If you phone them and make arrangements to go, you do get your first visit free and i think they have reduced rates for students . I think it cost me about £5.00 but it could have been less and reader ticket's last for about 4years. Then you pay £1.OO each time you go, but its free to got into other records office ie: Preston once you have your reader ticket. Stockport library have records of birth's,marriage's and deaths dont sure what year they go up to and the 1881 census. Hope this is of some help to you. Cynthia

Hi Kate Just to add if you go to Manchester to the records place you have to pay if you are from Stockport. I dont think its much its because Stockport wont contribute to the upkeep. Jan x

Hi Denise, I actually live in Stockport when I'm not at uni, so getting to Manchester would be no problem for me. Thanks for the offer though, Kate

I was wondering if anyone could help me? My great-grandmother worked as a 'nurse on the insane' according to the birth certificate I have of her first daughter. This daughter was born in 1912 at the Attendants' Quarters, Bury New Road, Prestwich. I'm therefore assuming (rightly or wrongly) that there was an asylum located here, or at least nearby. Does anyone know of an asylum located in the Prestwich area of Manchester c.1912? Many thanks, Kate
