The Heredis prog was on the January mag - the February mag is now in WHS. It has Family Tree Designer (free) which is not so good for presenting trees (despite its name!), I bought it a year or two ago. I find Heredis very easy to use and better for presenting things.

There is a free piece of software on the front of this months 'My Family Tree magazine' called Heredis. It's a full program, and the first I've tried so I'm not able to compare it.... but I like it ! It has a neat feature which enables you to see your tree in 3D. The mag complete with disc is £4.99 so not too expensive. Sioux

Jo Why not download the LDS free version - Personal Ancestry File (PAF). I use it and find it does everything I need it to do. There's some more information about it on another thread on this page about 'Help re Free Software for family trees'. Hope this helps Janet

Hi Darren, thanks for your help. Can you get it from the LDS site then or do you have to buy the programme? Jo

GEDCOM is an acronym for Genealogical Data Communication; it's a method of formatting the text of your family data so that different software programs and operating systems can read and understand it. The GEDCOM "standard" was originally developed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Family History Department, which holds the copyright. Although it began as a "universal" format, many genealogy programs implement their own, slightly-modified version of GEDCOM. Most family tree programs let you convert you tree into a gedcom file which you can then share with other people who use different programs Darren

I would be grateful for any advise on this. What is Gedcom, where do you get it and how do you use it? I have seen many times it being mentioned. I have only used this site and stored things in my documents on my findings. Is it better to use. Thanks for any help. Jo.
