Hi Ann Found this-- The House of Correction, which is the gaol of the North Riding, stands adjoining the court house, in which are confined from time to time from 50 to 100 prisoners. About two years ago a corn mill called a stepping mill, was erected for the employment of the male and female prisoners, consisting of three pairs of stones, a dressing mill and rollers for grinding malt which has been found to answer the purpose intended by this kind of labour. Mr. Thomas Shepherd (the father of the Keepers of the West and East Riding Houses of Correction) is the Governor, and this prison has the reputation of being well conducted. The population of the place amounts to 2626 The house of correction dealt with minor offences, this one in Northallerton was built in 1783 by a John Carr to replace a prison at Thirsk. Hope its of interest Rod (from Whitby)

Does any one know what the above means and was it a sort of prison? I found that my 3xGt Grandma was born in one in 1791, her mother was a pauper and a spinster and was sent to one in Northallerton from Whitby! Was she just naughty or could she have beenn selling her wares on the streets to Sailor's??? Ann,Darlington
