I have a few surnames in the family which are the same yet not related this happens twice. There are a few easy ones though some have mothers maiden name as middle name this happens quite a few times makin them easily identifiable!

New theory part 2 extended I've since found today that My Lewis Judd had three wives one for each census, and I think they're all called Mary but yet to confirm last one, not only that there is another Lewis Judd IN SAME VILLAGE and he had 3 wives too. Luckly he moved away and - well his weren't all called Mary-only one?! Perhaps my Lewis could only remember one name .........you guessed it ,his kids were called Lewis and Mary too.....Costing me a fortune in marriage certificates KIM

A plus - you immediately know when you're going off track, however! It's when you find another family in another county all with the same names as yours that it really throws you. You think -aha, i've found them only to find they're the wrong ones. No wonder I'm going mad. Jackie

Hi everyone, thought it was just me ... most of my rellies are James,George,Mary and Elizabeth, and hubbies are William and George .I think they referred to it as family tradition I just say lack of originality!!!!!!!.Mind you my father used to refer to my sisters and I as 1,2 and 3. I'm pleased to say that's a tradition I haven't carried on!!. Happy hunting to you all, Elaine

Im in same predicament! All Roberts seem to mary Sarahs. Everyone is called Elizabeth and in every generation there is a Mary,Robert and Benjamin. Maybe it was cos they had so many kids they would have a chance at remembering at least one of their names! Corrina

Pity those of us researching Scottish families, where the eldest son was named for father's father, second son for mother's father and third son for father. For girls just add mother and reverse the order of the first two. Then they start on naming for eldest or second brother to the father or the mother. Confused? ME TOO!!!!!! Patsy

Hmmm. I've got the very same problem - in fact i've been trying to help someone who thinks they have a link to one of my families - i'm pretty sure he has - but has also 'adopted' another family with all the same confusing names along the way. With us it's the MEN - I've got three generations of James Thomas - they all had sons James, Joseph and Thomas - it's enough to drive you to drink! Sue.

I have a theory that All James must marry Sarah's in my tree, and all John's seem to Marry Mary. if it's anyother name then Elizabeth seems to do. It gets so confusing when they have the same first and middle name and then you find the wife has the same name as the son's mother. No wonder my generations are all confused. Kim
