Can someone please tell me when they started putting the mother's maiden name on the 1837 index. Many thanks

I can confirm this as I just happened to answer this question for myself yesterday when browsing. Q3 1911 is the first with mothers maiden names, at least they were not recorded on Q1 and Q2 and I've not seen them prior to 1911. Regards Simon in Munich

Yes that's right, and they also started to put the partners name on the marriages at the same time. Irene

These are the dates of various index changes which I gleened from different sources Births 1837 - 1911, child’s surname and first names only. September Quarter 1911 onwards, child’s surname, first names and mother’s maiden name. Marriages 1837 - 1911, there are two entries, one for each spouse individually. You can check who married whom by seeing whether the volume and Office numbers are the same. March Quarter 1912 onwards, there are two entries, and the surname of the partner appears in each . Deaths 1837 - 1865, names only. March Quarter 1866 - March Quarter 1969, the age at death is given. After this the date of birth is shown, usual address, place of birth and maiden name of a married women (but info not always accurate) Bob
