I forgot to mention that the Cornwall census CD's come complete with a full name and place index - very helpful! I don't know if that comes with all suppliers. The Cornish index is supplied from the CFHS. Just been checking through some bits and the quality of the scans is excellent. Highly recommend Archive CD Books. Pauline

According to which part of the country you require, I have found the best supplier (and most cost effective) is Gordon Beavington who transcribes under licence to the PRO. You can find him at mycensuses(.)com - take out the () and I'm sure you will not be dissapointed Jim

You could try the auction site www.ebay(.)co.uk - remove the bracket. It depends on the area you are looking to purchase of course but theres loads on there. Sioux

Try the Family History Society for area of interest as they often sell CD, fiche, books for census which are in alphabetical order. Buying from S&N and other places you will probably need to know the address. You can either join FHS of your choice, for about £10 per year & obtain CD's and other information that way or you can access many FHS online or go to Family History Fairs and purchase that way. I find that I get a liot of help by belonging to an FHS of the county that I am interested in.

Hi Linda, I got the new Durham 1871 discs from Stepping Stones. If what you want is released yet you can pre-order at a redued price. Kay

I've just bought 1841 & 1861 Cornwall census from Archive CD Books. They have a special offer on for Cornwall until the end of January - buy 1 get one free. Also if you are a first time customer, you get the Universal British Directory for 1791 free! As my "freebies", I got the complete set of Philimore's Parish Registers and Kelly's Directory for Cornwall 1893. Worth having a look if you have Cornish roots. Pauline

Lots of places really as not all of them have all of the census I got Cheshire 1851 and 1871 from, the Cheshire FHS Cheshire 1841 I purchased from Stepping Stones at a Family History fair and I have just preordered 1861 cheshire from the online stepping stones website. (www.stepping-stones(.)co(.)uk removing the brackets of course) There is a place called S&N that others seem to buy them from. Try putting your requirement into the search engine and see what pops out. You may find ordering microfiche is a handy way of finding things. I Researched Monmouthshire and ordered the fiche for 1851/61/71 I oculd be specific to the area I needed which saved money, and then I went to the library to read them. These were only the index but enough info for what I needed Barbara
