Funny you mentioning it, had a letter yesterday from a churchwarden with a load of burial details - also from a note in a visitors book a couple of months ago. Certainly never expected anything!! Unfortunately, some churches have to be kept locked these days for security reasons so this option is not always possible :-(( Maz. XX

Lisa J in California Report 16 Jan 2004 00:59

Several years ago I wrote to my ancestor's church in the UK asking if there were any Vaus' left in the parish. There weren't any, but the Father was nice enough to look in the telephone directory and gave me three names to write to. I only wrote to one person, and he replied -- we had the same gt-gt-etc.-grandparents. I was able to give him information about numerous siblings; he was able to give me my ancestor's wife's surname and their marriage date. He also sent me two photographs of their headstones!

Along the same lines, when my husband and I visited a church yard in Dorset on our way home from holiday, we left a note in the church visitors book saying that we had visited looking for the gravestones of his ancestors and listing the surnames. A few weeks later we were amazed to receive a 3 page letter giving details of baptisms, marriages and burials as well as other interesting local knowledge from the parish clerk and after we wrote back (with a small donation to church funds) he gave us even more information. As you say, it's always worth a try although I have to add that we have been leaving such messages in visitors books all over the country for many years and this is the first time it's come up trumps.
