A funny thing happened when I viewed some old film from Scotland. I found it so hard to read but the first word seemed to be the same. I thought they can't all have the first name and then I realised that it said Lawful son or daughter of...so my search went on hoping mine wouldn't be unlawful. Christine

It depended on how the vicar felt at the time. After all, the parent(s) couldn't read and I doubt they expected someone two hundred years down the line to read it. They'd be mortified if could see us now!

They were used by the individual vicar. One was noted as being "John Smith, bastard son of that wench Mary Smith". I cant actually remember the correct names but you have the essence. Some vicars were polite and left just a space for the fathers name, others were quite nasty. Regards Helena

Don't think they did, Base born is the most common early 1800's all means the same thing born out of wed lock. I think they did that to shame the mother, but it didn't help the child. Irene

Hi All I have come across a number of terms in Parish Records for illegitimate children - Bastard child, Spurious child, natural child and illegitimate child. I am not sure if these terms are used as the personal preference of the Vicar or each have some specific definition. Can anyone help me? Paul
