Help with place names required

Hi all I have a few place names on the 1881 census that I can't find on any modern map, they are most likely transcription error but someone from the local areas ma be able to tell me different The first is Clemmran in Gloucester and the other is Wien Dau Glamorganshire in Wales. Any help with finding out where these places might be would be greatley appreciated, THANKS in advance Chris

Can't help I'm afraid - but someone who speaks with a Gloucestershire accent or who speaks Welsh may be able to help. I suspect they were written phonetically. My great grandmother's name was listed as Arnor. It should have been Honor - but she had a Devon accent!

Chris, Have you tried looking for these people on another census to see what the places could be? Also look for the births on FreeBMD to get the district. Crista

Hi Chris Have you tried looking on www.old-maps. co.uk? Click on 'County Gazetteer' and take it from there. Jeanette

Greeting's Christopher..... Just had a look at Parish names in Family search .....1881..... Vien due Glam. could be = Wenvoe. Tried the Glos. county but the best I could come up with my calligraphy skills is ...... Churcham. Cranham. Kemerton. MIKE.

w w w . a b c o u n t i e s . c o . u k Go to the gazetter and key in the place names. You can use wildcards too as many of the spellings from Census returns are a bit iffy.

I don't know of any place name called Wien Dau but wien could be "waun" (this is roughly pronounced like "wine" in welsh). Waun is a meadow. Dau is two. A translation would be 2 meadows. Could it even be the name of a cottage or house? John

It could be Cheltenham - it's pronounced 'Chelt-nam' so perhaps the enumerator mis-spelled it, then it was mistranscribed.
