Meryl: Do the following and should be able to access the site: 1. Go to START. 2. Click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS. 4. A box appears with tabs labeled across the top. Click on ADVANCED. 5. Scroll down to the sub-heading SECURITY. 6. Make sure the following has check marks next to it: Use USE SSL 2.0, USE SSL 3.0 and USE TLS 1.0. 7. Also make sure you check off EMPTY TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE WHEN BROWSER IS CLOSED. More than likely USE TLS 1.0 is not checked of and it should be. This will give you the error messages, as well as a few others, that will prevent you from viewing web sites and the error you are getting.

Maz I had tried putting the brackets in, leaving spaces, not putting the w w w - it just would not allow any part of the site to show no matter what I tried. Have always managed it before with others by doing just that (.). Don't know what went wrong this time. Anyway thank you for the site you gave - always interesting to look at new ones and I e-mailed Meryl in the end!! Kathleen

The Readers Digest book of Family History has a great section with samples of writing from different periods. It helped me emensly finding relatives on census records which had been transcribed completely wrong. You can ususlly borrow a copy from your local library.

Kathleen, just pop some brackets round all the dots in the web address and it should let you enter it! Try this site though http://amberskyline(.)com/treasuremaps/oldhand(.)html Cheers, Maz. XX

Oh well - I have tried several different ways of putting that web site on here but it won't let me do it. If anyone wants to know - just e-mail me and I will send it to you. Kathleen

Meryl Have e-mailed you with a site that has a link which could be what you are looking for. However have just thought others might also be interested in this, and it is a good site to browse anyway. Has 2% of the 1851 census available to download - not much but could be helpful. It is w w w.compter(.)org/ Kathleen

There is a help page on the FreeBMD transcribers pages about 19th century handwriting. Maybe that will help. Paul
