Don't apologise I am open to whatever suggestions people come up with cos otherwise it's a big dead end. I searched from 1810 - 1836 (the year he got married) and then went on til 1850 (the end of the book) where I found two of the kids, in fact they were the only Brandon's in the whole book!

How far did you search for his baptism? Was there any chance that he lied about his age, so was baptised before you belive him to be born? Or could he have been baptised as an adult? Sorry if you checked this.

Hi Caroline, Just swapped boards! 'Of this parish' only means he was living there at the time of the marriage. As John says, it is very possible he was born elsewhere. Debbie

But have you found them?? I spent ages today going through non-conformist records still to no avail. Do I put my hands up and say that's it and just concentrate on the rest of the family?

Caroline I have a similar problem with part of my family. I have a relatively rare surname that originates from a few villages in Somerset. However, that didn't make it easy to trace them because many were non-conformists and therefore neither baptised or married in parish churches. John

Yeah I know what you mean but how wide do I go? The marriage register said he was "of this parish" for Chesham too and even to this day most of the Brandon's still live in Chesham so I don't image they go far! LOL

Perhaps a silly idea but you may have to widen your search. Perhaps he was born elsewhere and moved to Chesham when very young and therefore thought that is where he was born as you only have the census word for it, if you see what I mean? This has happened to my rellies a couple of times. John

Thanks for your help. Here's what I have so far. John Brandon b.c1815 Chesham (info from 1851 & 1861 confirms this). Married to Esther Birch April 1836 Chesham (Aylesbury RO confirms this but no parents in Parish Register of Marriage). I did think about him not being baptised but wouldn't he have to be baptised to get married and have his children baptised?? Even the nice helpful lady in the RO was flummexed (sp??) She had me looking through reels of non-conformist film just in case along with films from neighbouring hamlets/villages/towns to Chesham...just in case. I really feel that I have gone through everything but

Hi Caroline, The sad fact might be that he wasn't baptised. How far back are we? Would he be on a census, with parents? Perhaps he was baptised in another parish, some couples used to take the children to the parents home parish to be baptised. You could ask one of the lovley people on here that have the discs to check the VRI for his baptism. What's his name? If you are searching Aylesbury RO, he was presumably born in Bucks. I have the 1851 Bucks census if that's any use? 1891 too, via Ancestry. Debbie

I have just spent all...yes ALL....of today looking for my g-g-g-g-grandfather's baptism going through films, books and fiche at Aylesbury Records office. An hour there and an hour back all seems for nothing. I have his wife's baptism, their marriage and baptism of two of the kids but not him......what do I do now? Without it I have no main line parents to follow and the trail stops cold. Any ideas? HEEELLLLLLPPPPPPPP!
