Sue and Rosemary Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated. Sue I have just checked the marriage certificate and he Edward was 27 years old in August 1916, so it looks as if you have found him. I guess my next step is to get a copy of teh birth certificate through bmd to see if his father is Alfred Smith, barman? About to log off as it is 12.30 am in Canberra, after three days of over 36 degrees cent and very warm nights, unusual for Canberra Regards and thank you Joan

Joan Free BMD gives a listing for the birth of Edward Arthur Smith in Sept qtr 1889, registered in London City district. I'm almost certain this district would have been within the sound of Bow Bells. Hope this helps Sue

Hello to all I have drawn a blank following my mother's father's family. The family was split up and therefore the 1901 cesus has not given leads. I have tried on other sites but with Smith being such a common name have drawn blanks He was Edwaed Arthur SMITH died 47 years of age in 1937, born I think 1890. My mothr who is now 85 years old writes that he was born in the Beehive hotel, within the "sound of Bow Bells", yet gives the address as Cadogan Gardens. From my look at a London map this seems far away from Bow Bells. He maried my maternal grandmother Elizabeth Allen on 5 August 1916 in Huddersfield Registry Office He had a sister Nance. a brother Alfred Thomas (Tom who died on 16/6/47 buried at East Sheen aged 63), a sister Daisy, (older than he was) and Edie who was fostered out when their father died, it appears her mother died in child birth) Alfred the father seems to have married again but still stayed at the pub until he died . Tom was training to be a bar man at St John's Wood according to my mother. Any tips would be welcome. I have really appeciated finding a community of other searchers The Ovens quiery could be helped through the National Library of Australia which has set up records of people who arrived in Australia. We might then have to go to the NWS registry site. Hope this helps Regards Joan
