According to my mother she was named after my grandad's american cousin. How can I find this cousin? Are there any american genealogy sites like we have over here?

Hi Caroline. I haven't used too many American sites (I'm Canadian), but I've found this one useful: http://www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator/usa/index.html Enter your ancestor's surname and quite a few sites will pop up. It takes a bit of time, but there are several sites that are useful. Note: I wouldn't use Ancestry though (it's one of the sites that pop up). I've heard from three American friends that it is not useful and you have to pay for additional information. I've never used it and don't know if that is true. "We" are just starting our day over here. Perhaps one of the other residents will have a better suggestion, once they've had a chance to see your message. If you have any additional information you would like to share, after work I could try to see if there is anything that I can do. I haven't been too successful, though :~(

There is a site called ussearch(.)com that may be helpful for finding living relatives as well as US census at Ancestry. At USSEARCH you can do an initial look-up of a name for free, and the site results will give you limited information as to where you can find them (ie: name & state.) For a small fee, the site will give you the rest of the information you are looking for (ie, telephone number and address.) I have found, though, that by obtaining the state a person lives in at this site one can then look them up in the online telephone directory as long as the person has their phone number listed. The site has a sliding fee scale depending on how much information you want on the person. So for a small fee you can let the site give you information or with a little detective work you can get it for free. I have a subscription to US Ancestry census records if you need a look-up.

Hi Thanks for your replies. I did a quick look at the site you all mentioned and her name only came up once on the Social Security Death Index. Can anyone suggest where I go from here? Maybe I should wait until I've traced my grandfather's brothers completely but was hoping that if I found "her" then that might give me a head start. Caroline

If you send me the details from the Social Security Death Index, I will find you the link to submit for a copy of the original document that was filled out. It should give you information that should prove helpful in genealogy search.
