Hi Gillian, Out of curiosity I typed in mechanic (Sp & m) 1881 census and although it did not give the actual definition a resident of Stockport Union Workhouse was a mechanic (Sp.m) and he was a spindle maker. Gen

I am looking at (possibly) my gr gr grandfather Henry Smith's occupation on the 1881 census. It says he is a mechanic (sp & m) Does anyone know what the sp & m stands for? Need as much info as possible when looking for Smiths! Thanks
