Birth date you have for your Thomas matches the information the US Social Security Death Index has below. Being your Thomas came in to the states through Ellis Island and his last known address is NY below, I would think this is your Thomas. You can write to the Social Security Administration, here in the states and you can obtain an original copy of the application that Thomas filled out for his social security number (SSN #127-10-9472.) The copy of the application should reveal where he was from, possibly parents, etc....I'm not sure what kind of system you have in the UK, but every working adult, years ago, had to have a social security number in order to work. Now adays, at birth, everyone is issued a social security number.....it's how they (the government) keep track of us here. Judy THOMAS HOUNSHAM SSN: 127-10-9472 Last Residence: 11103 Astoria, Queens, NY Born: 10 Oct 1878 Last Benefit: Died: Jan 1969 State (Year) SSN issued: NY (Before 1951 )

Julie, There are 2 Ellis Island entries for Thomas. The one from 1912 says he is from Cambridge. There is a death record for a Thomas Hounsham here: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi Crista

I think i may have found one of my ancestors on the Ellis Island site. Thomas Hounsham b 1878 arrived there on 26 Oct 1923. Mabel Hounsham b 1880 arrived there 20 Nov 1920 I have a Thomas and Mabel on my tree- i don't know her year of birth but Thomas's agrees with what I know. I think they were married in Q4 1901 in Cambridge District. so far i haven't managed to find a death for wither of them in the UK Unfortunately Ellis Island doesn't give their ethnicity, but they did leave from Southampton. Any Ideas how i can follow this up to check they are my ancestors? Cheers Julie Tebb
