You're very welcome, Bob. I really hate to see people being ripped off. I've learnt to my cost there aren't too many short cuts (although it's brilliant when you strike lucky!) I buy quite a lot of CDs, which I sell on when I no longer need them. Occasionally I make a small profit, but generally I don't and just get back some of my costs, so I can buy more data. Genealogy has, however, become big business and there are a lot of sharks out there. Sue

I agree with all of you about the 'Ancestry-style', advertising of products as though they can wave magic wands, whereas all they have is bits and pieces of data, not always consecutive or complete. However, I have the CD which covers Essex and it's been brilliant for me, because 1550-1750 is exactly the time I'm interested in. Data CDs seem to come up again and again in various threads, so for people new to this I thought I'd list some of the suppliers I've dealt with (and I have to say I've found ALL of them very helpful when I've rung or emailed). ARCHIVE CD BOOKS www.rod-neep(.)co.uk...have scans of books, maps, etc. in addition to censuses and directories. TWR COMPUTING www.twrcomputing.freeserve(.)co.uk/ageneral(.)htm....supply the British Surname Atlas, Ancestry products and other software. S & N GENEALOGICAL SUPPLIES/BRITISH DATA ARCHIVES http://www.genealogysupplies(.)com STEPPING STONES http://www.stepping-stones(.)co.uk LATTER-DAY SAINTS ONLINE CATALOGUE http://www.lds.org.uk/acatalog/LDS_Online_Catalogue_British_Isles_111.html Suppliers of: 1881 census, Vital Records Index, 1851 census (Devon, Norfolk, Warwick) FAMILY HISTORY BOOKS (from the Federation of Family History Societies) www.ffhs(.)co.uk Supply fiches, books and a few CDs. And finally... Some individual family history societies (look on Google) have indexed records relating to their own area and their products often work out cheaper than the big suppliers. Some tips for buying CDs (I'm sure others can think of more!) 1 Be clear what information you are looking for. 2 Find out what data is included. Which areas/parishes? What dates? Is coverage complete? Contact the supplier and ask them if you're not sure. 3 Ask yourself if this is the most cost-effective way of finding the information you want. 4 Be aware of the difference between an INDEX, TRANSCRIPTION and ORIGINAL image. S&N sell the index to some censuses at a reduced price if you purchase the census itself from them. I have seen people pay over £50 for an index on eBAY!!!! 5 Beware of inflationary bidding and illegal copies on eBAY. Check out the price AS NEW and email the seller and ask who the publisher is if it's not clear from the picture. Hope people find that useful. I know there are loads who knew it already and I expect some people will have some more tips. Happy hunting! (Hopefully without being ripped off!) And Merry Christmas! Sue

I wasn't defending the advertisers. The Ancestry style -- relentlessly describing any tiny fraction of a set as if it were the complete set -- seems to have infected the whole business

That’s OK Robin but is not too obvious from the CD (which I have in front of me) that it is only a “selection” of records. It just says “English Parish Records West Riding and Nottinghamshire”. The contents are on the web site but not on the CD Documentation. Margaret was unhappy with hers also and Marian appreciates the info which is why I posted it. This hobby is expensive enough ! Bob

Montmorency Report 23 Dec 2003 12:13

They don't compile these from original registers, they look round for old published editions that have gone out of copyright. In Yorkshire I think Phillimore published the Doncaster and Rotherham marriages in book form, and the rest of the list look like YPRS books (mostly out of print but available on fiche) -- see www(.)yorkshireparishregisters(.)com The YPRS has been publishing one book a year for over a century and at that rate they've still got many centuries to go. The books are all at Leeds Central Library and other main libraries CDs like this are an effective way to buy the books if that's what you need to do. But if you're expecting to buy the output of a massive new transcription project, no, there hasn't been one

Sheila, Allerton Bywater is part of the parish of Kippax which are on the disk for 1539- 1812. Yes Margaret someone mentioned the 1812 thing before, might have been you. The period 1812- 37 is a big gap to cover. I havn't sent mine back, suppose I should have. Marian, there is some coverage of Sheffield but it looks sparse, up to about 1750s. Not very good at all. Just looked at the CD properties and it only has 136mb on it. Less than 20% full. Bob

Hi Bob, can you tell me if Sheffield is on your WR CDs? I had been wondering whether to buy, thank you for the warning. Marian

Margaret

Margaret Report 20 Dec 2003 12:54

Bob I agree, I ordered a Leicestershire/Rutland/Lincolnshire CD a couple of years ago from Ancestry. Only one Rutland parish was done and hardly any of the others. I sent it back and got a refund. Most of the marriages were available on the IGI anyway. I know why the baptism and burials end at 1812 though. That is when they stopped using the same book for Baptism, marriage and burial. After that they were all kept in different books. So, I suppose this has been used as a cut off date. Margaret

As the owner of one of these (from TVRcomputing) for West Riding Yorks and Nottinghamshire. I don't recommend them. They are highly incomplete and most records end at 1812 not 1837. I live in Castleford (WR) and they are not on. They do exist 'cause they are in the library. Save your money. Bob
