My ggrandmother Julia Mantle was born 26 Jan 1865 21 William Street North in the sub district of Islington West Middlesex. Her parents were William and Jane Mantle formerly Bren. This is from a copy of a birth cert issued 7th July 1938. Jane appears to be the only Bren on Genes connected. On the 1881 British census 120 Andover Rd London Middlesex Julia is 16 daughter of Jane and William Mantle. Lydia Brew aged 80 is also living there - Mother in Law born Westminster. I have checked 1837 online for birth Jane Bren/Brew in years 1837 and 1838. No luck - any clues? Christine

I think you have your years muddled. Why check 1837 and 1838? Do you mean 1937 and 1938 If you mean the latter then try 1939 as it may have been registered a little late? John

Also, Marriages Jun 1859 Bren Jane Clerkenwell 1b 716 Mantle William Clerkenwell 1b 716 IGI has these people with Lydia as a mother. The father is listed as Henry: 1. CHRISTOPHER JOHN BREN - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 12 JUN 1836 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England 2. FREDERIC CORNELIUS BREN - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 25 NOV 1832 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England There's also a marriage record for a Henry Bren to a Lydia Arkell and a birth record for a Henry Bren in 1808. The time period fits in with Julia. Crista

Wow! You guys are amazing! I'd convinced myself Jane's surname must must be Brew. Thanks Crista for the marriage info - now I'll have to look for Clerkenwell - never heard of that before. Thanks so much. Christine

Thanks Amanda, I'd so convinced myself the name must be Brew I mainly checked for that surname on 1837 online. Thanks again, Christine

Christine, Clerkenwell is a registration district in London which roughly borders the City and Holborn. In 1869 it became part of Holborn but now comes under the umbrella of Islington. Most parish records are now held at the London Metrolitan Archives. Hope this helps. Jean.
