If rochester road was the local reg offiice in 1909 then bombing this in WW2 would not affect the GRO Records from 1909. If I have read you right. Bob

I always thought that if someone was registered late, then the registrar had to go and write it at the bottom of the page where the entry should have been ie in your case, 1909. I would check the early fifties dates though because I can't imagine every registrar would have been all that consciencious.

I am trying to find my Grandfathers Birth certificate. He does not appear in the Birth Indexes for 10 years either side of when he was supposed to be born (1909). According to my mother, he was registered at Rochester Road Police Station when he was born. This was apparently bombed during WW2 (according to the PRO it was not!), and all records were destroyed. In 1952 - 53, he needed his birth certificate and was re-registered at Somerset House, where his siter signed an affidavit stating when he was born and he obtained a certificate. If he was re-registered does anyone know if this would be in the indexes for the year he was born, the year he was re-registered or where?
