I need help (well thats what people tell me) getting started trying to trace my family tree. The trouble is I have only my two Brothers still living. My Mother is dead and my Father split up with my mum when I was about 3 and have no idea of his whereabouts. My grandparents died when I was about 10, so cannot ask them for details. I only know my mums date of birth and death and my grandmothers maiden name and date of birth and death. I have no certificates of marriage etc. How do I get started tracing relatives? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation Paul Roberts |

Paul Your mothers birth cert will give you her fathers name as well as her mothers, also her mothers maiden name. Same with you dad's. If you know approx dates you can look on 1837online for the code http://www(.)1837online(.)com/Trace2web/ remove brackets Go backwards from them getting birth, marriage and death certs until you get to 1901 when you can check the census check the resource centre on the left of this screen for useful sites and good luck Margaret |

I think we need some clues to get you started, for instance what was your mums date of birth, and do you still have her birth certificate? Val |

Paul, have you looked on Freebmd - http://freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com Remove the brackets Here you can find the Vol No. and Page No. so you can send off for their birth certificates. Before sending for them you could check on 1837on line to check you have the correct Vol. and Page No. Another useful site is - http://www(.) family search(.)org Hope this helps June |

Paul, I began my husband's tree with just his birth certificate and a memoriam card from his mother's death. She died when he was a baby. I have got back to 1700's. So good luck with your search. If I can help please ask. As others have said begin with your mother's birth certificate, the marriage one would be helpful too Sheila |

Paul. The best place to start is your Mum. You know her name (!) and DOB so you should be able to find the ref for her Birth cert. This will give you the full names of her parents. With boths names you should then be able to find the ref for their marriage cert. The idea is to get yourself back to 1901 so you can look for possibles on the census and work backwards. If you register with Ancestry.co.uk you can view all the BMD images for free. ( Some are indexed but only upto about 1910 and then they may not be complete so be carefull ) Good Luck Esta x |
