That would explain it then, if they were still births or died young. Just didn't think there births would be registered. Seems quite obvious now.

I wish I could ask tonight. Keep missing these live chats. Sadly I am working tonight. Perhaps someone could ask for me. I did want to ask for some help on how to trace My Great Grandfather (Grosvenor Ashford Clarke) and were I could look that might help me. I have tried everything I can think of now and I am against a firm brick wall there. But it is too much details to ask someone to ask that for me. Oh well hopefully I will be able to make the next live chat.

Siobhan I think you will find that these are the births of children who died within a few hours/ days. Unfortunatly I have found a few of them in my research. Perhaps they didn't feel the need to name them. Lynda

Siobhan Not totally sure on this but I think that happened when the child was either still born or died very shortly after. No chance to get the birth registered properly when that happens. If I'm wrong I'm sure I will be corrected. You could always ask on line tonight during the Q&A session. Mike

I often wondered about this myself as a transcriber for FreeBMD. Talk about a nightmare! It's hard enough when we have names!!!

I have noticed when looking at the birth indexes. That there are alot of entries where the names are Male (Surname) and Female (Surname) Surely it wasn't that difficult to choose a name for your child that you had to register them as Male or Female. I dread anybody looking for their ancestor if they have been registered as Male of Female. I am sure are ancestors liked making things hard for us. I just hope I never am searching for an ancestor whos name was not decided at the time of registration. What does everybody else reckon on this???
