Thanks for looking. My William Wakeham wold have been in his forties. He was born in 1847 or 1854 (actually it was 1847 but he lied).

The elusive men are: William Herrick b.1856 in Aston, Birmingham and William Henry Wakeham died between mid-1881 to mid-1885, Stoke Damerel, Devon. The pages for the 1850s births are handwritten and in places quite hard to make out - I'm not surprised they haven't been transcribed. The 1880s deaths are typed and, where they appear on the same page, I checked Wakems, Wakelams etc.

Kathryn, I had probs with one of mine on the 1837. Should have been Alfred Bumb but registered Bump on the certificate. His mother couldn't write so the way she pronounced the German name probably sounded like the latter. Also his sister was registered Bomb! Have you tried Eric, Herick or even Merrick or perhaps Wakeman or Wakerham? Sorry if you already have but I thought I'd mention it Aileenx

I have been wrestling with 1837online for ages and I cannot find anyone on there. I have a William Herrick who should have been born in 1856, but wasn't registered then or any time in 1857. The man I suspect was his brother was there, but no William. Nor was there any sign of William Wakeham. He was alive, kicking and lying about his age on the 1881 census, but his wife remarried in 1885 so presumeably he had died by then. Where do I go from here? I'm finding it hard to get anywhere with no certificates and no censuses!
