"it has been estimated that between 1837 and 1875 up to 15% of births were not registered particularly in Surrey,Sussex.Essex,Shropshireand Middlesex" (Herber) many thought baptisms counted as registration so try those if possible. Bob

In Ireland non-Catholic Marriages were registered from 1845, and all BMD's were registered from 1864. Paul

Hi Alison Registration became compulsory only in 1875. Bear in mind though, that a few records will be found only in local registration offices, and did not get into the national index for one reason or another (never sent, got lost, etc.). Baptism records may also help. My grandmother's birth, even though in 1875, was apparently not registered. To get her pension she provided evidence of her baptism from the Church, which she remembered, as she was at least 6 at the time. Best wishes Stan

I have the same problem , I know mygreat grandfather never had a birth certificate even though he wasn't born until 1887. His parents didn't travel very much as they ran a bootmakers and would loose a days business to register his birth so they just didn't bother, luckily some of his relatives are still alive.....but it is frustrating. I ask because i have found some information on familysearch and cannot link it onto 1837. i am searching for the birth of Jane MAry Chipperton 16 dec 1845. I cannot find it and neither could i find another Chipperton - Frederick when i was looking a few months ago. This is starting to drive me crazy. Now i hear there could be another brother CHarles. what are the chances of one being registered and not the other!! None i would say. What can i do next?! Alison
