Your local library will be fine to look at certificate indexes. I have spent many a happy hour in Carlisle library where they hold all the GRO indexes from 1837 to 1999!!! Anne

Zoe Thank you. Might give the local FHC a ring and see what info they hold. Lily

Lily, not sure about the info at the local library - unless you are in the area you think the marriage/death would have taken place. I do all my birth/marriage/death look ups at the FRC, but thats because I'm based in Scotland and all my research is for London. someone else may be able to answer that for you Zoe

Rosemary Many thanks for the suggestion. I have had a look at freebmd but they do not have much info for 1901 onwards but I have got 4 possibles. I was thinking of 1837 online but thought that it may prove a little expensive and as it is only curiosity and not a vital part of my research thought I'd try "going round the houses" as they say. Hi Zoe Many thanks for the suggestion. Would I be able to do this at the local library as they hold the GRO indexes. I have tried freeBMD and the only have a small amount of info for 1901 onwards. Lily

Lily, I'd start with trying to find his marriage between the dates you have. When you have the GRO reference for this (the year, quarter, volume and page number) looking at the actual page should give you two female names for possible wives. This would therefore narrow down the names you are looking for with deaths for the first wife. Zoe

Hi I am fairly new to all this and hope that I have the correct board, apologies if not. I would very much appreciate any suggestions or help that people may be able to offer. I have just been sent a copy of a marriage certifiate for a rellie for the year 1908 which took place in Richmond Yorkshire. On this he is stated as a widower and curiosity has got the better of me and I would like to try and find out who his first wife was. I am not a full member yet so I am unable to email people directly but will only post basic info incase this person has living rellies out there but will be happy to go into detail via emal. Thomas ? is listed as unmarried and living in Northumberland on 1901 census so was first married and lost his wife between 1901 & 1908 when 2nd marriage took place. My idea was to look at the GRO indexes between 1901 and 1908 and take down the details for all marriage of Thomas ?. Then to have a look at all the female deaths for that surname again between 1901 & 1908 discounting infants and the elderly and see how many I come up with. Not sure what I will do then but does this sound like a good way of going about it or has anyone else go any better suggestions. Lily
