My great grandfather is missing from the 1881 census. Would he have appeared on the census if he had been in prison? Pam

Hello Yes Prisons and Institutions (ie workhouses stc) were included on the census. The likelyhood is that your ancestors name has been recorded wrongly. Sharon

Yes indeed....I found one of my family in Parkhurst, Isle of Wight in the 1881 census....hadn't known about him. haven't been able to find out anything more yet. Maybe try a wider age range? Joan

I have tried several variations of his name John Boon born 1861 in London. By the 1891 census he is married to Eliza and living in Brighton. I have searched under Boan, Boone, Bone with some results but I cannot be certain any of them are right. His father was also named John Boon and was a coach painter by profession although he was dead by the time of John Jnr's marriage in 1886. Any suggestions on other spelling variations? Thanks..................Pam

Sharon, Joan and Andrew........Thanks for your help. I was hoping prisoners were not included.......rather a black sheep than another lost relative. Andrew, Bon is a variation I haven't tried yet so will get right onto it. Regards...............Pam
