Hi I found them on familysearch on the web. By process of elimination. Also refusing to be beaten ... I eventually ended up looking for Lydias in Croydon at the time of the census. It didn't help that John was Alexander, Ida was Ada and Lydia was not recorded as being born in Westmorland, but - hey! got there in the end. The address is at the bottom of my previous message. No, I don't suppose the enumerator had checked loqucy on a map then do you.? I notice that Lydia seems to have lost some age as she was 22 when she married 1874 and 48 by the 1901 census. She had a child in 1875 who was 15 and living in Islington... (Was he a terrrible teenager she had to get rid of?!) Maths isn't my strong point but I think she should be 38/39.Thank you for the address Ann. I wonder what spelling they used for the1881 census, These are definitely, the right ones, my great grandfather was WILFRED, They,ve moved about a bit . You might also want to look for André and Jean rather than Andrew and John (supposing they had French first names of course). I thought that Mons would be short for 'Monsieur ' as all the other entries on that site have first names or abbrieviations,after the first name. Looks like I've got a lot of checking to do! The situation is this I know my great -great grandfather was called John Peter Alexander Strouwelle or recently Strouvelle, his father was called Andrew, I don't know where either was born John was born either 1834-5 , but I am struggling, I have his marriage certificate, and have traced his death in 1889, I know he worked as a professor of language in Windermere, Cumbria and London, and his father Andrew was a travelling merchant. But Andrew doesn't sound very foreign to me I wonder if it has be anglicised, or whether the story is a family myth?I can't trace either on 1881 census althoughJohn's son Percy is on 1891 and John's wife Lydia is on 1901, why isn't John on 1881? Maybe he wasn't in the country. He died in london. Sorry for waffling but a few pointers would help!! It's not a very common name so you think it would be easy to do, most Strouvelle's I find are in America! Thankyou

My great grandfather was from ALSACE LORRAINE....my search for him took me to Germany and Poland (opposed to France.) Perhaps I have had trouble locating him as I was unaware that I should be looking in French records! Thanks, Paul! Judy

Unfortunately, Alsace-Lorraine has changed hands many times in its history, the most recent being around WW1. You may have to look at both German and French records to find what uo are looking for Paul

I have been told my g.g.g g.grandfather came from ALsace -lorraine , his descendants male don't seem to be on the census often. Is there a website that Has details of immigrants from here, this would be around 1850s? thankyou.
