Wrong Birth Cert?

I ordered a birth certificate for a Sarah Ann Grayston born in Greenwich in 1855. I have received (after waiting 2 weeks!) a certificate for a child named Sarah Ann born in Greenwich in 1855 but with the parents stated as being a Mr and Mrs Endsworth (mother's maiden name Harding), is there any way this could be the correct certificate or should I presume I have somehow been sent the wrong one? How could this have happened, if I'd given the wrong reference I thought I wouldn't have been sent the certificate!? Helen

I would have thought that they would send you the certificate that corresponds to the reference you supplied. The name difference does seem odd though, I am not sure why that should be. Did the registrar include a receipt with the reference number on it, so that you can check they got it right.

Thanks Carol, I ordered it using the reference in the books at the FRO in Islington. Do you know if that reference would relate to one entry or a page of entries as, if this was the case, maybe there was just another Sarah Ann on there and the wrong one was copied? Think I'm going to have to phone them to sort this one out! Didn't get any receipt with it. Helen

The ref is only a page number, they have to pick visually from up to 10 on the page. The index does have a Sarah Ann Emsworth on what could be the same page (not altogether readable) so you're probably right. If you phone, they'll probably ask you to send it back with a note, and then send you the right one, hopefully quicker

Thanks Robin, expect that's what happened, I'll give them a call. Helen
