Zoe: NO! I've never seen that and I have to be at work in 13 minutes (I'm opening the office)! I'm confused about how to obtain the information about the Mumford's -- I guess I can figure it out when I get home and I'm not rushed and excited about your site. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Miles. Unfortunately, that James is not mine. But, thank you SO much for taking the time to not only look him up, but also to have written all of that down. I REALLY appreciate it. If I can find proof of my James' birth then the Mumford family you uncovered is related to me! (There are church records of a James Mumford christened in early January 1827 in Hatfield Broad Oak [parents James and Martha] -- he is connected to the Birchanger Mumford's.) My James was born on 26-Oct-1826 (parents James and Martha Mumford). He was born in "Hatfield", England. I am trying to confirm that he was born to the James and Martha Mumford who were living in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex. (There are several Hatfields in England; I am trying to find proof that he was born in Hatfield Broad Oak and if I can obtain his profession from the 1851 census [and it matches my James' profession], I could then consider it solid proof that we are connected to some of the Essex Mumfords AND have acquired quite a few [living] relatives in my home province.) Miles, thanks very much for all of your efforts. I wish you the best of luck with your searches!

Hi Lisa I don't know whether this is the James Mumford you are looking for, but if it is, this info may help further your search. James MUMFORD Born: 1826 Place: Birchanger, Essex, England Christened: 30 Dec 1826 Died: Feb 1827 Place: Buried: 18 Feb 1827 Father. Thomas MUMFORD Born: 30 Mar 1803 Place: Birchanger, Essex, England Died: 1 Feb 1859 Place: Birchanger, Essex, England Mother. Mary HORSENAIL OR HORSNELL Born: 15 Jan 1807 Place: Hatfield, Broadoak, Essex, Died: 17 Dec 1865 Place: Birchanger, Essex, England As was often the case with infant mortality, Thomas and Mary named one of their subsequent children James and this one may be the one you are looking for. James MUMFORD Born: 27 Feb 1832 Place: Birchanger, Essex, England Christened: 9 Apr 1832 Place: , Birchanger, Essex, James was one of several children

Robin, thank you for the information. I will probably wait a bit before asking on the Records Office board (please see my message above), but thank you for the suggestion. :o)

MyTrees say they've got 3% of the 1851 census, but they don't seem to be saying which 3% There's a national 2% sample transcription of the 1851, could be they've got that. S&N sell it for £30, but they don't own it exclusively, so there could be cheaper sources Somebody must have bought it. Wouldn't hurt to ask on the Records Office board

Hi Joan, Stephanie and Carol. A couple of years ago I purchased the most expensive Family Tree Maker software we could find, because it contained one Canadian CD. Turns out that several of my ancestors are on the CD; however, in order to obtain any information I have to purchase additional CDs. So, I was wondering if there was a "catch" to this website -- apparently there is. I am fairly certain James Mumford was born in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex -- I am just trying to find solid proof. If the James listed in 1851 (in Essex) has my ancestor's occupation that would be proof enough for me. James is not on the 1841 census (probably out earning a living?) and he was in Canada by 1857 so 1851 is my only chance to connect him to the Mumfords living in Hatfield. I've already asked for 4 lookups (regarding other ancestors, too!) and am too embarrassed to ask for more. Joan, thank you for the look ups. Carol, thanks for your message. Stephanie, after things calm down here, I shall try a family history society, thank you. I wish you all the best in your searches!

I have a number of 1851 discs from various counties. If you let us know the county, we may be able to find him.

Hi Lisa, If you know a county, you could look at the family history society for that area and see if anyone is doing look-ups (possibly small charge). Try Cyndi's list for loads of info on specific counties. Good luck! Steph

Hi Lisa How annoying! There was a UK 1851 census but it seems as if the results are all split up I have the results for Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire and he isn't on there. Maybe if you tell us where he was born, GC people will have a look for you where they can Good luck Joan in Warwickshire.

Silly question, but is there a "general" 1851 UK Census? My ancestor, James (I will find him if it kills me) Mumford was born in 1826 and "MyTrees" has a James with that year of birth listed on the "1851 UK Census". Is there such a thing? (Thought the census was broken down by counties.) Thanks so much.
