Thanks everyone! I am completely taken aback by this response! Yes, William Presgraves is my man. He has 7 brothers and sisters? Good lord, there can't be a Presgrave(s) alive that isn't related to me! I have found one marriage which is possibly it: Marriages Sep 1854 Allen Ann Boston 7a 522 Presgraves William Boston 7a 522 Now that I have parent's info, I shall definately be ordering it. Thanks so much, I was not expecting such a prompt and helpful response.

HI Kathryn, Margaret has beaten me to it, I've been looking on the IGI and found many Pregrave/s. I am wondering on one particular family, 8 brothers & sisters, all born in Leverton, Lincs between 1808 to 1820 and their parents were William & Elizabeth Presgrave, are your rellies..?? Carol mentioned a marriage of a Hobson Presgrave, he is one of these children. Knowing your ancestors forename will help us abit more. Regards, Dawn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Update:- I have just worked it out from the info you gave above, your ancestor must be William Pregrave, aged 73 on the Census 1881 and his wife is 52. Found this on the IGI....... CHRISTENING:- William Presgrave, 26th of July 1807, in Leverton, Lincs. Parents:- William & Elizabeth Presgrave. (the same parents as the children I found, also on the IGI) I'm afraid no marriage/s mentioned for your William that you are looking for... I have just looked on the VRI - (British Isles) and there are no William Presgrave/s for a birth or marriage. Regards Dawn.

Kathryn Have you tried the IGI. You may find one or more marriages for your man. I don't believe you gave his first name. Then try a parent search. Put in the father's first name and surname and the mothers first name only. If you refine it to the county you may have some luck. Give me more details and I will try to help Margaret

I have just done a search on freebmd, and there are quite a few Presgrave marriages in Lincolnshire. What was his first name?

Try and find the marriage for him. The certificate will tell you if he was a bachelor, widower etc., then you will know if he was married before.

Sorry that took so long, I had to bang my head against the desk repeatedly whilst typing. And of course, it may be that there was no first wife. All those 20-something Presgrave(s) could be the sons and daughters of my 73 year old - but I can't prove it!

I am researching Presgrave(s) in Lincs. I have several in my tree who come from Leverton. Out of curiosity, I looked to see how many other people of this surname were born in the area. The answer: lots. Excluding my relatives, adult males born elsewhere and married/widowed women, there are enough to keep a double-glazing salesman busy. My dilemma: I have a Presgrave(s) father on the 1881 census who is 73 years of age and his eldest is twelve. I find it hard to believe that a man's first marriage took place when he was 51. If he had any brothers or any children from his first wife, then most of the Presgrave(s) on there have to be related to me in some way. How can I prove (or disprove) this? I have no idea who his first wife, if she existed, was. I have no way of getting at the 1851/61 Lincs census and no address anyway. Subtract 73 from 1881 and you get 1808 - before birth records. It's driving me ever so slowly mad.
