How long have UK Census been taken place?

Census for 1801, 1811, 1821, 1831 were a head count only. No names. 1841 was the first names census. Ages are round down to the nearest 5 years. Place of birth is county only. 1851, 1861, 1871 are mostly if at all address indexed. 1881, on CD or online at family search 1891 online at Ancestry and some available on CD 1901 online 1841 to 1901 all available at an LDS or main library and County Record offices (library and CRO for their area) on microfiche. census are not available to view until 100 years have passed. Hi Amanda, Thanks for replying. I'm not searching for anything at particular at the moment (could change later) but I was just interested in how long they have been going on because they hold quite a lot of interesting info. Also, if they only started say 1801 then I know not to ask for a 1791 look up. Any info appreciated. Thanks

Click on 'resource centre' on the left, then go to 'research guide' and scroll down - they have all the census dates there. Maz. XX
