Jean, How sad that you can't find out about your grandmother, I think the 100 year rule should be changed, after all what harm could be done, 50 years + after she has passed, perhaps the government are worried that they may be sued for negligence after the way some people had been treated in the past. Thankyou to all the people who have contacted me with website address', I have e-mailed a few as there is a stillbirth's register, I'm now trying to find out if it accessible online. I'll post once I have some more info as it may help other family tracers in the future. Nikii

Nikii, I have just been refused permission to view my grandmother's medical records under the 100 year rule. She was taken into Colney Hatch Asylum in 1924 and died there in 1941. I am desperate to know why she was kept there for so long as conflicting reports have filtered down through the family. However, this seems to be one area which will remain a mystery. Jean.

Deaths of stillborn babies should have been registered since 1874 and births fom 1926 If a child lived for more than a few seconds, there should be a birth and death cert. It all seems a bit murky though. These deaths may not be in the normal place but listed at the end of each quarter. Bob

Thanks for all your replies, I am determined to unravel this one as this was the main reason I started researching my family tree, it would be nice if the baby was adopted and living , but sadly I think she may have been stillborn, I just hope there is a record somewhere, it's so much harder trying to trace relatives when the main family members have passed on, we have a few old photo's and don't even know who they are, it's so frustrating as it would be so nice to know who's who. Hi again, Is it possible to obtain copies of medical history for someone who's deceased?, my problem is that my Nan told myself, my mother and my Dad that she had given birth to a daughter but she had died, I have looked through the births for a 12 year period and have not managed to find any other birth entry than my dad's, we have come to the conclusion that this baby girl may have been stillborn, but we don't know if they kept reords back in the 1940/50's of still births, so was wondering whether this information would be on my nan's medical record.
