Thank you for your relpy, what had happened is that my grandfather was abondoned in a hospital when he was 9 months old and the childrens home had his surname but there are no other records recorded in his surname (even in the UK) so that is why we are going along the lines that his surname was westenized as there are similar sounding surnames (but not many) which we are chasing up. We have found out that alot of Russians moved from Russia to other countries and did westenize their surname. We are just drawing a blank on the surname that we know! :-)

Sorry this is probably no help but the 1881 census records my ancestor as a naturalised British Subject (therefore he was born abroad) but no mention of where. We have his marriage cert (with his 'English' name on) - he was married in London - but that's it. His father was recorded with the same 'English' surname. I've been to Kew where the naturalisation papers are kept but you need to know his name before it was changed - so I couldn't find anything at all. Good luck, I hope you are more successful than me! My grandfather had a very strange surname and we are not sure that it is his real surname. His parents were from Russia and emmigrated to Canada in 1900 and we belive that his surname was westernized. IS THERE ANY WAY WE CAN FIND OUT WHAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN? as there are no records of my grandfathers parents marriage or a record of his birth or his siblings births. Any help will be gratefully recived, thank you.
