Some people have been having problems accessing FreeBMD when they have Norton. Don't turn off your firewall, you just need to configure it to allow FreeBMD. A couple of people have emailed me asking how. I have replied to them, but thought that more may be having the same problem. Don't forget to remove the brackets around the web addresses Margaret NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2003 This is for Norton 2003; it should not differ too much in other versions. Double click Norton icon Click on OPTIONS at the top and choose INTERNET SECURITY Click WEB CONTENT tab Click ADD SITE (at the bottom) Put in the name of the site you want to allow access to (don’t put in the http:\ bits) In this case freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com Click OK Single click on the freebmd site name (now listed on the left) to highlight it In the INFORMATION ABOUT VISITED SITES part (right side), take out the tick on use default settings. Click in PERMIT Click OK That’s it! Another site you might want to allow access to is col(.)statistics(.)gov(.)uk That is the certificate-ordering site. Otherwise you may find you have to disable your firewall when you come to pay. Not a time to risk when you are entering your credit card details.

Thanks for the tip Margaret. I've been turning off privacy to get into freebmd, and then sometimes forgetting to switch it back on when I've finished, so this is a great help. Thanks again. Di.

I had weeks and weeks of fiddling around with the settings for Norton - and no matter what I switched on or off it still wouldn't allow me to access what I needed to! I originally bought Norton because I thought it was supposed to be the best - but now wouldn't touch it with a barge pole or recommend it to anyone... I found it a real pain and it didn't catch every virus (even though I ran live updates every day). A few weeks ago I finally ditched Norton and am now using NetProtect provided by BT. It's trouble-free, hassle-free, safe and reliable - and my research has taken off no end!

Hi Margaret, I haven't been able to access freeBMD either. I got to the part: Click WEB CONTENT tab - couldn't see it. What am I doing wrong? Christine

Linda I'm sorry you don't feel confident with Norton. If you had tried this you would have been able to access FreeBMD. I had had loads of emails from people to say that it now works. As for running Live Update every day, that won't work. Norton only update Live Update , I think, on a Wednesday. If you want to update every day you will have to go on the symantec website and install new virus definitions every day. I wonder if you are getting mixed up with live update and full system scan. It is the scan that picks up any viruses. I run that every day. Margaret

If you have Norton Internet security 2002 or before, I believe that the tab is named "Advanced Options" or similar.

Hi Margaret No, I'm not getting confused. I regularly ran live update and did a full system scan - but I still got infected by a worm. I also did all the things that you advised (not because you advised them, but because umpteen other people did!) I still wouldn't recommend Norton to others, and I wouldn't use it again myself. However, my current system is completely trouble and hassle free - so I'm happy. NetProtect is based on McAfee and I personally think it is much more reliable and user friendly than Norton.

I have used norton antivirus products all the time i've had pc's and norton firewalls the last 3 years, and always favoured them. But however im dissapointed with the last two versions 2002 and 2004, they have the annoying habbit of moving the functions around between the different versions to must Unlikeliest places you would expect to find them..... so not as user friendly as they could be, therefore a nightmare to novice users. Im seriously thinking of looking at other products next time.
