Susan Be careful if you buy fron e bay, a few people have commented on here they actually paid more from ebay second hand, than they would buying from new. I have bought my census discs from S&N and they came in two days. Hope this helps a bit. Lynda

Thank you all for your help, where do I find S&N? Is it a web site? I'll also look at Stepping Stones. Susan

Hi All, There is a notice, at the moment, on Stepping Stones home page, warning people about buying from e-bay. Someone purchased a census cd from e-bay, not only paying more than Stepping Stones charges, but the disc was a fraudulent copy!! Debbie

Just added S&N to my favorites - not heard of them before, but they seem to have loads there. Thanks for the tip. Pauline

Another supplier of censuses, directories etc on CD is http://www.rod-neep(.)co(.)uk/ They also have a sponsorship scheme...you can sponsor a book to be scanned and produced on CD for £25 or £50. In return, you receive free goods up to the value of £34 and a 15% discount on all future purchases. On the subject of ebay...not all the traders are crooks! I sell CDs I don't need any more on there to finance future purchases. However, my discs are originals and I tell customers how much they cost new. However, you won't find many bargains on there especially censuses. I'm always amazed that people will pay up to £30 for the 1881 census when it's free online and the CD set from the LDS costs less than £30! If you want to bid on ebay, find out how much it costs new, deduct the amount you'll have to pay for postage and set your maximum bid. Beware of people who have more than one of anything for sale, because it's unlikely they are genuine family historians and they could be selling illegal copies. Sue

Be sure you understand what you're buying. Mostly you aren't getting anything like the transcription / indexing / search facilities that you get on the census websites. You may just be getting scans of the enumeration books Don't assume anything's indexed by name unless it actually says so. Just "index" usually means a street index or even just a placename index If there's a name index it may be just surnames only, painful with a common surname. Some indexes are only part-finished: as with the VRI, there'll be new "editions" and then you have to re-buy what you've already bought Don't buy anything that's not name-indexed unless you're really sure it's what you want. Find out the population you might need to search, and figure out how many pages that will be! If there is a decent index for the area you want, usually by the local FHS, this can be a better buy than the images. (A request to their search service can be even better value) Once you've got references you can get page offprints from the films

I ordered the 1841,1851,etc for Nottinghamshire from STEPPING STONES last June I still haven't received anything. they say some will be released either before or after Christmas (lets hope its this Christmas, or it could be Christmas 2004) Why didn't they tell me at the time of ordering how long it would be? I've since ordered other Counties from S & N and received excellent service, I'll stick with S & N in future. June.Nr.Preston
