Thanks Margaret. I have tried an online search for the marriages, but could not find them. I shall have to go to the records office to find them when I have time. But that seems to be the only way forward. Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew Perhaps you need to get Henry's marriage certificates. Then you would get his father's name and occupation and also his wives father. Then you would have something to cross reference with the census. Margaret

Andrew Report 1 Dec 2003 16:56

I am having difficulty tracing my maternal grandmothers family. My grandmother was Mary Ashton, b. 1911, St Helens. She was the daughter of Henry Ashton and Ellen Ashton (Ashton also maiden name). I do know that Henry was previously married to Mary Ashton, Ellen's sister (I think older, but I am not sure), but she died shortly after the marriage - possibly in childbirth. All of these were from the St Helens area of Lancashire. There are a few Henry, Mary, and Ellen Ashtons in the 1901 census, but I am not sure which are the correct ones. Any help, advice or suggestions would be most gratefully recieved. Andrew.
