I have a similar problem in that I know my rellie was based at Shorncliffe Camp on the 1891 census but thats it! How can I find what regiment he was in, I do plan a visit to Kew next week but where would I start with trying to find that out?

I found out my great grandfathers regiment from my grandfathers birth certificate and contacted the regiment museum to confirm that his number was definitely from that regiment, they were very helpful and told me it was def from that regiment and gave me some details of where they fought etc but could not give any other information have to go to Kew I'm afraid. Try the following: www(.)armymuseums(.)co(.)uk or www(.)regiments(.)org or www(.)armedforces(.)co(.)uk I actually work right next to Kew at the retail park, but have not had time to go into PRO, 1 hour lunch break not enough time me thinks!! I know I should use this resource seeing as I work next to it. best wishes zoë

Hi Helen It can prove quite expensive and not of much use to ask the regiment for a search-my friend did this and for 3 copies of not very helpful info paid between £30-40. At Kew they have a large section on military things, mostly on microfiche. it's worth going on their website for a look before you visit and you can register for your reader's ticket on-line to save time before you go. Hi, Jacqui, I take your point. Does Kew have all the regimental info, then?

Hi - I tried with the Royal Horse Artillery in Woolwich, as I know they have a regimental museum and lots of archives there, but unfortunately they could not help as they said they were not allowed to; however they do allow professional researchers access to the records - this obviously would be at some cost I think, so I did not pursue this any further. I think I will have to visit Kew to research the particular records I want myself. Jacqui

Does anyone think that, if I addressed a letter to a regimental archivist and enclosed a stamped addressed envelope that I would get a reply? I need to check if someone actually was in the regiment he was supposed to be in.
