Can anyone advise on difference between index numbers and Entry numbers that are to do with Birth Certificates. I'm designing my own record keeping forms and when looking on Index listings they have a number to refer to when you request certificates but also you get an Entry number that is found on a certificate.

The index number is a GRO reference number which is of no use to anybody other that the GRO. The individual books for Births Marriages and Deaths in each parish had 500 pages. The entry number refers to the numbered certificate within the book. Therefore, the entry number will always be between 1 - 500. That's my understanding anyway. I'm sure that someone will know more about it. There is an explanation about certificates on one of the links from FreeBMD. Jill .
