Hi Ruth, Just to give you a little hope, as has been mentioned on here before, I was "found" by Joan Allan at myfolks(.)co(.)uk on behalf of my daughter. I was living in London, got married in Cornwall, moved about the country quite a bit, settled in Shropshire, got divorced, changed my name by deed poll and luckily as I said I was still found. It can be done so don't give up hope. When you do find out names Friends Reunited is always worth a try. That is how my daughter found her dad. Janet

Ruth - you didn't say where you are living now. I too am trying to find my birth family - with only my adopted birth certificate. I live in the south west and the local social services put me in touch with S.W.A.N (South West Adoption Network) - they are brilliant and have professional researches that can spend time looking up all sorts of records (birth certificates, marriage certificates etc). There is a charge but not that much - so far it has cost me under £100, and this includes obtaining copies of birth and marriage certificates. Their telephone number is 0845 601 2459 they may be able to help or put you in touch with a similar network in your area

my mum has got all her cert by writing. i'm not sure if you have to give the name first & if they have a match then you pay or if you pay first then they search??? but you don't have to go in person. ring first & ask. good luck. gina

Hello Ruth, this is a 'just in case'. You mention your Mom was in touch with the National Adoption Agency Thing. Well if its full title was National Adoption Information Clearinghouse then the site is probably for USA only, I was looking around the site and only noticed at the last minute that the address was in America. Amanda and Ruth, Sorry if I what I wrote was confusing. I meant that the certificate you can send for is the entry in the adopted children's register. That in turn may give you a registration district and somewhere to start looking. Also have you tried your local social services? If your mother has the court details of the adoption, it may give her real name. Another idea is to post a message on Joan Allan's site at MyFolks. It's all a bit like doing a jigsaw, you need a vital piece-I'm still trying to find mine!! Sue

Hi Ruth At the FRC in Islington there is a section for adoptions. If your mother knows what her real name was, or if she looks under her adoptive name,you will get a reference number to apply for the certificate. Good luck, Sue

I am trying to trace an older sister who probably doesn't know about me but may have tried finding her Birthmom. I am also trying to find info ,I have found the birth record on 1837 but it says ( female ) then the mothers maiden name ,I know this is the right one but why was no first name given. she is 22 now , how can i find out what her adopted name is without anyone knowing about it,Thanks

as liz has said your mum can get a copy of her birth cert. they cost £7. i would suggest you start from there. then see what info you can get from that and then maybe post some trying to find messages. one thing always leads to another and there are lots of lovely people on here that will help if they can. are you only just starting this? my mum is doing all the cert stuff & going to the records offices, i've got the easier bit of doing the comp searches (she hasn't got one!) i think the hardest part is actually knowing where to look to get the info! good luck. let us know how you get on. gina x

Hi could you obtain a copy of her birth certificate, which should give her birth mothers details, you would then have to try and see if she remarried, maybe 1837 online would have details. I'm sure others may give some more suggestions. Liz

Hi, thanks for emailing me. She did contact the National Adoption Agency thing, and nothing has come back! She has lost her original birth certificate, but how would she get it back? Her mothers name was on it, but if she has married or changed her name, will she ever be able to find her? Ruth x

hi ruth. get in touch with the adoption contact register and give as much info as you can. if anyone has registered a search for your mum then a connection will be made. hope this helps. were doing the same to look for my uncle. has your mum got here original bitrh cert? gina

hello, and thank you to anyone reading this!! How would I get information about my mothers real parents, she was adopted but her adopted parents have died. All I know is that her real mum was 17 and a trainee nurse and her dad was a doctor from Leeds! Thank u so much Ruth xx
