Is there anyway pre 1833 records can be viewed? I have someone b 1811 and would like to find if he had any brothers/sister. I do not have his date of birth so cannot get a certificate, plus I do not know who his parents were :( Viv

Viv Do you have a place of birth, or at least a possible area? Sue

Sounds like a job for IGI. Go to www.familysearch(.)org and choose International Genealogical Index Fill in first and last name and Region, at least. Unless the name is very rare, put in year 1811 and range +/-5 for luck. With luck you'll find the christening, and that will give you the church and the names of the parents, if you haven't got them already. To find brothers and sisters, leave first and last name blank, but fill in father's name and mother's first name. Widen the year range, say 1811 +/- 20 If it's one of those churches where the parson didn't record the mother's name, the simple approach doesn't work and you have to resort to batch numbers

Viv, for records pre 1837, you have got to look at the Parish records. The LDS site and the IGI are great, but not always complete or accurate. The Parish Records are usually held at the County Record Offices (for example - North Yorkshire is at Northallerton, and County Durham's records are held at the County Hall at Durham City). Some local libaries hold the information too & occassionally can be more useful than what is held at the County Record Offices. Paul
