The problem I have is that I moved to Nottingham in 2000 and only get to go back to Sussex to visit my mum who is not too well. The areas of Sussex I most need to reach are all small villages, Withyham,Warbleton, West Firle, Heathfield and surrounding areas, also I have a lot of ancestors from Brighton. My 2x great grandfather was born in 1780 and married for the first time in 1802 so 1837 and census's are not much help as he died in 1855. Likewise other great, great grandparents were born prior to 1837. I think subscription to some Sussex history sites is probably my best option. Thanks for your replies...........Pam

Hello Has your husband got an equally generous single brother? Seriously, you can also book loads of stuff through your local Latterday Saints Family Research Centre if you live a long way from the areas you are researching. For less than £3.00 I've got parish records WAY back from small villages in France. The people there are very helpful too, if you explain what you are trying to do. Have fun spending! A

Depends where you live, where you are up to in your search and what information you have already collected. My options would be 1) certificates (it costs £21 to get the full set for one person but they are the key to all other reseach get some of the ones you have skimped by not getting) 2) a visit to the County record Office to search the archives live, no substitue for copies of actual parish records. 3) subscriptions to local family history soc (cira £10) if you dont already have one 4) If you live in traveling distance of London, a) a trip to the FRC b) Subsrciption to Society of Genealogists (you get free use of their library) plus a few visits to use their resources. 5) a few goes on pay per view sites like 1837, 1901 census and stuff Pam

Pamela - what part of Sussex? - have you had a look at the Sussex Weald site - it's mostly East Sussex and only a few villages so far- but well worth a look! Sue.

Personally I've had more success on census discs than anything else.

We are surrendering some endowments this month and hubby wants me to have £200 to spend on things to help me search for ancestors. Most of my ancestors were born in Sussex or Wales. What should I spend the money on, census discs, books or Ancestry sites? Suggestions please. Thanks............Pam
