Have you tried Army Records. If your great grandfather can't be found on the 1901 census he may have been abroad in the Boer War

Hi Sylvia Thank for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I only know his father's name as it was on my great grandfather's marriage certificate. Michelle

Have you tried looking under his mother's maiden name? One of my lot took his mother's name (he was illegitimate) and later took his stepfather's name. Regs Jane

Hi Lesley Thanks for your advice. However, I have spent many hours at the FRC searching 10 years either side of possible year of birth and I haven't found it. I have also checked the LDS site and the 1901 census (upon which he doesn't appear), I can't think of where to look next. I am beginning to wonder if his birth was ever registered. Michelle

Does anyone know if it is possible to request a birth certificate, without knowing the date of birth? I have been searching unsuccessfully for my great grandfathers date of birth for many months now and I don't really know where to go next. I have his marriage and death certificates, which give me an approximate year of birth. Can I use these as checking references or should I just keep searching until I find him? Any help will be much appreciated Michelle
