Thanks Martin. I might just come across him and the others one day. Shirley

I have not looked at many of the 1881 pages (usually use the CD-ROM) but in other years there are special pages for institutaions. There is a title page that identifies the institution then pages to list the inmates. Martin

Anne I see what you mean. I tried various combinations and had 2 which fitted age but right out of area. As you say, it was very sad to see. Thanks for advice. Shirley

Shirley When I said initials I meant initials only! In this case GS. It wouldn't be much help if you found one though because you could never be sure it was the right one. GS could stand for anything. That's why I was so shocked. To see pages and pages of just two initials was very saddening. Anne

Anne I have tried C G SIMPSON < G SIMPSON nothing came up. I tried C. Glover and Charles Glover. Not having much luck. In 1881 his wife is down as married and living on Settlment. Seems strange. Do not seem to be getting anywhee. Shirley

Regarding hospitals, I recently came across a county asylum in the census. There were over 1000 inmates and they were only identified by their initials! I was shocked but I guess that's how it was in those days. If an ancestor was there it would be almost impossible to identify them but the search on 1881 does come up with initials if you put them in. Try it! Anne

If someone was in hospital or in prison (perish the thought) would they still be on 1881 census? I am looking for Charles Glover Simpson b 1832/3 Middlesex who disappeared along with 3 of his children and reappeared in 1991 Southwark but not with any children although by then they could all have been married.
